Bringing a new cat or dog home is exciting, but the first week is easier when you keep the routine simple. Your pet does not need everything at once. Start with a few useful basics, give them time to settle, and build from there.
Start with food and water
Keep fresh water available and use a feeding routine your pet can learn. If you are changing food, do it gradually where possible instead of switching everything overnight.
Create a comfortable safe space
Give your pet a quiet place to rest away from constant activity. A familiar bed, mat or corner can help them understand where to relax.
Make play part of the routine
Short, appropriate play sessions help pets explore, bond and use their energy. Choose toys that suit their size and supervise new toys until you know how they use them.
Keep grooming low-stress
Introduce brushing, paw handling and basic cleaning gradually. A few calm minutes are more useful than turning grooming into a struggle.
Buy for real needs, not a giant checklist
Food and water items, safe play, basic grooming and comfortable everyday essentials are a strong starting point. Add more once you understand your pet’s habits and preferences.
